The film later received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. “BlacKkKlansman” premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prix. ![]() Spike Lee’s historical drama “BlacKkKlansman” centered on Colorado Springs detective Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) who infiltrated a local Ku Klux Klan chapter with the help of fellow officer Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver). The film received an A rating from IndieWire and went on to be nominated for six Academy Awards. Cannes audiences stood for 10 minutes to applaud the lesbian romance period piece. Moments like that are often immortalized in Cannes history and add to the mystique of the iconic festival. The ovation can be interpreted as both an indicator of the film’s quality and a gesture of appreciation towards its legendary director and his A-list cast for making the trek to the festival. The tradition continued this year when Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” received a nine minute standing ovation - a feat that’s all the more impressive considering the audience had already been in the theater for 206 minutes. Critics, international audiences, and Oscar voters all have a role to play in defining a film’s legacy, but Cannes audiences get to write the first chapter with their applause. But for a filmmaker, few thrills compare to receiving a rapturous response to your movie’s Cannes premiere. And not every film that receives a massive ovation ends up being remembered fondly by history. Not every film that gets booed is bad - some undisputed classics have been the target of Croisette ire at one point or another. The over the top responses are a ritual in and of themselves, and many see the practice as a declaration that cinema is an artform that’s worthy of our unbridled passion. Virtually all films receive either a standing ovation or loud boos (or in some cases, a combination of the two). There’s virtually no such thing as a lukewarm response at the world’s biggest film festival - or at least, nothing that an American audience would recognize as lukewarm. ![]() For certain film industry observers, the number of minutes of applause that a buzzy movie receives on the Croisette is as significant as the first wave of reviews.Ĭannes audiences have long been known for their bold responses to new movies. But whether you see the practice of tracking ovation times as a fun cinephile tradition or an oversimplified waste of time, there’s no denying that it happens every year. Each Cannes Film Festival is accompanied by the annual debate about whether the length of a film’s standing ovation is an accurate measure of its quality. ![]()

![]() I repeated the same process except I did this for the mountains.I dry brushed some green onto where the forest icons where. The next feature that I painted was the forest. After the lakes and rivers are done I went ahead and dry brushed the dark blue color for the ocean that I drew in on the left side of the map.I've got shaky hands, and I think the map came out okay. There's nothing wrong with a little blip here and there. Its okay if you go over the lines or you make it too dark. Now dry brush the light blue for your lakes and rivers.I never painted directly on this stuff before. I did this because I wanted to experiment, and see how grainy the cardstock was because its a common crafting material that I use in my terrain projects for my table top games. What this will do is the paint will hopefully only catch onto all the bumps and ridges that paper has in it. Now take your brush, and take nice and light brushes on your map until there is a noticeable amount of paint on the map. To dry brush you need to get some paint on your paint brush and wipe it off on a towel until there is barely any paint coming off of the brush. There are a lot of videos on the Internet on how to do this, but I will go on and describe this technique for you here. You can choose to paint your map in any order you want, but for this project I started with my water features.I saved that part for after the painting was done. For me I had a lot of room to create a title, a legend, and an ocean. If you were lucky like me there was some space where the dice didn't fall onto.It was something I expected as that was my smallest dice pool, but hey you can just blame the dice right? Okay, bad lame joke aside its time to move onto the next phase of this project! ![]() My forest were looking a little barren.Where ever there was a large cluster I decided to draw them in as a large lake instead of individual rivers. I got luck as most of the dice happened to have fallen near each other in a nice cluster. After I drew in the features I took a moment to look at how I wanted to draw the river. If you get tired or get cross eyed you should take a break.I wanted to save that for last as I wanted to see how I can add twists and turns in the body of the river. ![]()
![]() ![]() He also eventually admits that he had been depressed for at least the past 3 years leading up to the interview. He later states that the OVA “had turned out so cute that thought it was bad” and “that there’s something wrong with the main character”, concluding that “it doesn’t contain the cinematic elements that hope to include in anime”. In an interview with Animerica in 2000, Tomino mentions that he had chosen to return to the Byston Well universe because he “was out of energy at that point” and had “made it when he was sick”. Tomino refused to talk about the show, politely replying with answers like “I’d rather not talk about it” to every question. He doesn’t seem very open to discussing it - in a 2007 column about Garzey’s Wing for Anime News Network, Justin Sevakis described an awkward interview session where, due to work obligations with Garzey’s Wing US licensee Central Park Media, he was only able to ask Tomino questions about the series. Who was responsible for this decision? No one really knows exactly, as Yoshiyuki Tomino has done very few interviews about the OVA since its release. The final 5 books in these series make up a side story/prequel, Garzey no Tsubasa, and, at some point while he was writing them, someone decided to have him adapt them into an OVA series. By 1997, when the final novel in the series had released, he had written 24 books set in Dunbine’s world of Byston Well. Aura Battler Dunbine would run for 49 episodes over the course of almost a year in the early 80’s, but Tomino continued to expand the franchise through a series of novels for more than a decade after the TV series ended. Other credits include the more light-hearted Blue Gale Xabungle, and, of particular interest to this article, the first isekai anime, a sword-and-sorcery-but-with-mechs series called Aura Battler Dunbine. After that, he would direct Space Runaway Ideon, a show that Hideki Anno would later borrow a lot from for Neon Genesis Evangelion. Yoshiyuki Tomino is better known as the creator of Mobile Suit Gundam, but his resume goes even further than that - after starting his career in the 60’s working under Osamu Tezuka at Mushi Production on the original Astro Boy TV series, he’d go on to create Gundam at Sunrise. Despite those things, fewer people have fond memories of Byston Well Monogatari: Garzey no Tsubasa, also known as Garzey’s Wing, a three episode OVA written, directed, and storyboarded by Yoshiyuki Tomino. Staff worked on another medieval fantasy OVA that was released that year, one with an arguably higher pedigree and based on source material also beloved by many. This isn’t an article about Slayers, though. If you were into anime at all in the mid-90’s, Slayers was a huge deal - Cowboy Bebop was still a few years away, so if you were an anime obsessive around that time there’s a good chance Slayers, along with Dragon Half, was one of the gateway shows used by your local anime club to lure you into the fandom. Staff released the second in its Slayers movie trilogy in 1996 as well, and the TV series, produced in conjunction with SoftX and TV Tokyo, was still going strong, as was the light novel series, the manga, etc, etc. Slayers was in its prime at the time J.C. Staff, founded by ex-Tatsunoko animator Tomoyuki Miyata, would unleash a sword and sorcery OVA directed by and based off the legendary works of a powerhouse creative this year, before going on to further fame the next year with Revolutionary Girl Utena. Most importantly, a little studio named J.C. TV Tokyo would completely revolutionize the industry later in the year by airing a risque adventure series, Those Who Hunt Elves, at 1:15 AM on Thursday mornings, creating the modern concept of late-night anime shows as glorified infomercials to advertise future home video releases. Detective Conan has just started its 900+ episode run, 90’s fandom favorites Saber Marionette J and Martian Successor Nadesico were airing on TV, and also Dragon Ball GT is happening, sparking all sorts of fun, mis-translation-assisted rumors on the internet and esteemed publications like Pojo’s Unofficial Total Dragonball Z. The year is 1996 and we’re at the start of another anime golden age, kind of. Some of the information in this article is outdated now - you can view the panel and read the notes/sources here.
